That is different from plans that advertise a daily allowance and reduce your connection to a very slow speed once you reach it. These plans can make sense when you are working during your trip, joining video calls, regularly streaming content, uploading large photo or video files, or simply do not want to monitor a fixed data balance throughout your stay.
It is still important to read the plan details before purchasing any unlimited eSIM. Across the industry, “unlimited” does not always mean unrestricted high-speed data under all conditions. Network management, local congestion, and acceptable-use rules may still affect performance.
Our current product page lists Unlimited Pro 5G options for 15- and 30-day terms alongside our fixed-data plans. The unlimited plan supports hotspot use, but its hotspot allowance differs from that of our fixed-data plans.
Hotspot and tethering support
Journey Japan eSIM supports hotspot and tethering, allowing you to share your phone’s connection with a laptop, tablet, or another traveler’s device.
This is particularly useful if you need to work during the trip, respond to emails on your laptop, connect a Wi-Fi-only tablet, or briefly share data with someone traveling with you. You do not need to rent a separate pocket Wi-Fi device solely to connect a second device.
Our fixed-data plans can be used for tethering, with hotspot usage deducted from the plan’s overall data allowance. The Unlimited Pro plans currently include a separate hotspot allowance based on the plan’s duration, so travelers planning to tether heavily should check the exact allowance shown at purchase.
Hotspot use can quickly consume data, particularly when a connected laptop begins downloading updates, syncing cloud files, streaming video, or backing up photos. Travelers who expect to work remotely will usually be better served by a larger fixed-data plan or the Unlimited Pro option rather than the smallest plan.
Simple setup before your trip
You can buy a Journey Japan eSIM online before leaving home. After your purchase, we send the QR code and installation instructions to you by email, so you can add the eSIM to your phone while you still have a reliable internet connection. Delivery is normally immediate.
The plan activates when it connects in Japan, rather than when you initially add the eSIM profile to your phone. This means you can complete most of the setup before departure without using part of your validity period while you are still at home.
Once you arrive, you generally only need to select Journey Japan eSIM as your mobile data line, make sure data roaming is enabled for that eSIM, and allow the phone to connect to a supported Japanese network.
The activation code is intended for one-time use. You should not delete the eSIM after installation unless our support team instructs you to do so, since the same code may not be reusable. Travelers should also be aware that new activations may be unavailable during the telecom provider’s scheduled weekly maintenance period, currently listed as Tuesday at 9 p.m. through Wednesday at 10 a.m. Japan Standard Time.

An eSIM is simple when everything works correctly, but troubleshooting can be difficult when you have just arrived in another country and cannot get online.

For a typical one- to two-week trip, the 10GB or 20GB plan should cover many travelers. The 50GB plan makes more sense for people who plan to use their phone heavily, share the connection with another device, or travel without depending on hotel Wi-Fi.
We are a strong option for first-time visitors who want simple installation and English-language support, travelers visiting rural or mountainous destinations, and people who need hotspot access for a laptop or tablet.
We may not be the cheapest option for someone who only needs 1 or 2 GB for a brief city stay. For most tourists, however, Journey Japan eSIM offers the combination that matters most: straightforward plans, major Japanese network access, broad coverage, hotspot support, advanced setup, and English-language support when something does not work as expected.
2. Sakura Mobile
Sakura Mobile is a Japan-based provider offering travel eSIMs, physical SIM cards, pocket Wi-Fi, and longer-term mobile plans. Its travel eSIM range includes both 4G and 5G unlimited options, although the usage rules differ between the two.
The 5G plan uses the AU network and is marketed without a daily high-speed limit. The lower-priced 4G option includes 3GB of high-speed data per day, after which speeds are reduced to 200 Kbps until the allowance resets at midnight.

Sakura Mobile costs more than many international fixed-data providers, but it offers local support and plans developed specifically for Japan.
Travelers considering the 4G product should view it as a 3GB-per-day high-speed plan rather than unrestricted high-speed data.
3. Ubigi
Ubigi is operated by Transatel, an NTT Group company, and offers eSIM plans in more than 200 destinations. Its Japan plans use NTT Docomo and include fixed-data, unlimited, recurring, and regional packages.
The service uses a reusable eSIM profile, so travelers can add new plans in the Ubigi app without installing a new eSIM. Data sharing is supported, and fixed-data customers can purchase more data if their original allowance runs out.

Travelers can choose a Japan-only plan or use one of Airalo’s regional and global products when visiting several countries.
The exact network, speed policy, and hotspot conditions can vary between packages, so it is important to check the details of the specific plan rather than treating all Airalo products as the same.

However, unlimited phone data does not necessarily mean unlimited tethering, and local network-management policies may still affect speeds.

Some Nomad Japan plans connect through KDDI au and SoftBank. The precise networks and 5G availability depend on the selected product, so travelers should verify those details before checkout.

Its Voice Lite and Voice+Data services provide a Japanese 070, 080, or 090 number, which may be needed for local verification codes, banking, delivery services, housing, work, school, or Japanese booking platforms.
